Your personal gear is split up into two sperate 'packs': your 24-hour pack and your 72-hour pack. Your 24-hour pack is your search load and survival gear. As its name implies, this pack should allow you to survive for atleast 24 hours incase you become lost and/or injuried while in the field. You 72-hour pack is your existance load. This should allow you to survive comfortably for 72 hours. The main points to note on both of these packs is that there is no 'right' or 'wrong' style of pack; rather, use whatever works for you, but be sure that you can carry it comfortably, because (especially in the case of your 24-hour pack), you will be wearing it a lot.
Your 24-hour pack, as mentioned, is your search load and survival gear. This is the pack that you will be wearing, or have within arms reach, at all times while in the field. There are no formal requirements for the type of gear that you use. Many people prefer military issue web gear, load bearing equipment (LBEs), or load bearing vests (LBVs), although a backpack will work fine. Use whatever works for you, just make sure you have the required equipment.
